MAN commissioned “Owner’s engineer”

Triangle bottom right

The new gas terminal in the port of Oxelösund extends Swedish methane infrastructure significantly and improves access for the country’s industry. OxGas AB, a fully-owned subsidiary of the Port of Oxelösund, has appointed MAN Energy Solutions as “Owner’s engineer” of development and construction of the new terminal.

Feeding liquefied gas to SSAB’s steel production in Oxelösund, as well as directly to vessels in the port of Oxelösund, demands a multi-functional and flexible solution. OxGas has engaged MAN Energy Solutions to support them in the development of a class-leading functionality, designed and built to offer excellent, long-term operational performance.

It is important for us to work with a company that understands our vision and requirements for what will be the single biggest investment ever made in the port, says Douglas Heilborn, CEO of OxGas AB and the Port of Oxelösund. MAN Energy Solutions have the experience, competence and pro-activeness needed to offer cryogenic and complex multifunctional energy solutions.

Experienced partner

MAN Energy Solutions competence centre for Cryogenic solutions, MAN Cryo, is based in Gothenburg. The company has been closely involved in the development of previous gas terminal projects in Sweden.

We are very proud of having been selected to support OxGas and the Port of Oxelösund in the development of their new business, says Louise Andersson, Head of MAN Cryo.

Carsten Dommermuth, Senior Manager International Business Development at MAN Energy Solutions adds:

We strongly believe in liquefied natural gas and other sustainable synthetic fuels as an important strategic pillar to decarbonize the power industry, transport and industry sector.

As the new gas terminal will supply liquefied methane (natural gas and biogas) to a large part of the industry and the shipping business all around the Baltic Sea, this project is significant for the continuous development of our entire region. OxGas AB has appointed the trusted partner COWI to perform a multidisciplinary planning of the terminal.

The location of the new gas terminal is carefully planned and now it’s time for the more detailed part of the process – and this is where COWI comes in, says Douglas Heilborn, CEO of OxGas AB and the Port of Oxelösund.

A holistic commitment

COWI has long experience and knowledge in conducting advanced industrial projects, from idea and analysis to complete facility.

We have great trust in COWI and have established an ECPM contract* to enable COWI to take an active role in the process, says Douglas Heilborn.

COWI’s assignment is a comprehensive commitment that includes project management, detailed planning of all disciplines, purchasing of equipment, agreements with subcontractors, installation management, and commissioning. The terminal is planned to deliver its first batch of liquefied methane in the end of 2022.

We have a close, long-term collaboration with OxGas and a very proud of being able to contribute to the ever so important green transition within industry and transports. We are happy to share our competence all the way, from planning to delivery, says Anna Berggren, Marketing Director of Industry at COWI.

The temporary step 1 terminal has been delivered and mounted on site – an essential milestone for OxGas. This simple and standardised solution allows us to begin deliveries of gas to SSAB already by the start of the summer. At the same time, we’ll make the transition to the large permanent terminal easy and uncomplicated. The final stages of the installation will begin after Easter, making the terminal ready for commissioning by the middle of May.
